In Kazakhstan, BNS will perform at the
'Voice of Asia' music competition. This
international music contest is held annually
in a city called Almaty and has been running
since 1990. The competition attracts performers
from over 14 countries, including Kazakhstan,
Czech Republic, Indonesia, Philippines,
Georgia, Bulgaria, Latvia, Malta, Malaysia,
China, Yugoslavia, Mongolia, Armenia and
Singapore. Each performer competes to
win the title of best singer in Asia.
The pressure is on BNS to top their last
achievement at "Voice of Asia".
In 2001, the duo came runners up and were
awarded the silver medal.
"We honestly didn't expect to win
anything at all" says Santhush
"It took a while to register in our
minds when we were announced as the silver
medal winners". BNS say all their
efforts are focused on winning first place
this time. "You can prepare for something
like this all your life but it comes down
to how you perform on the night. We are
confident about our performance and repertoire"
says Bathiya with a cheeky wink.
BNS's stint in Kazakhstan will be followed
by a series of shows in New York (U.S.A)
, Toronto (Canada) and Bad Homburg (Germany)
The shows have been organised by Sri Lankan
Airlines and will be part of their inaugural
launches in each country. The show in
New York will be the duo's first ever
in the United States. "It will be
interesting to see how American audiences
respond to our music" says Santhush.
The German leg of the tour will be the
most hectic for BNS - 5 concerts in 5
days. When asked how the duo will manage
to deliver energetic performances night
after night without a glitch, Santhush
replies "it's just pure determination
really. And when you think about it, this
is what we love doing. That is all the
motivation we need".
When asked about the band's most embarassing
moment during an overseas tour, Randhir
is quick to raise his hand. "Let
me tell you. It was during a show at the
Sydney Opera House. That place has close
to a million changing rooms and it's so
easy to get lost. I was searching for
the men's changing room and walked straight
into this room that I could've sworn was
the right one. Turned out to be the girls'
changing room instead. Believe you me
the screams of a dozen angry women is
not a pretty sound. It scars you for life...
" he laughs.
On returning to Sri Lanka in mid October,
BNS and their crew will have only a brief
moment's rest before their next overseas
venture. A december tour of the U.S.A
and Canada is being negotiated at the
moment. "And they think musicians
have an easy glamarous life...which idiot
said that ? I wouldn't be packing so much
Panadol if that were true" laughs
Bathiya.
